At FutureProof 2026, Joyce N. Ho gave a keynote presentation and companion workshop on the importance of a personal practice seperate from branded projects for clients.
This project drew inspiration from both Joyce’s message, and her generative art.
Brief
On a receipt printer, printing text data is a different function from printing image data. Like a Dot-Matrix printer, you can’t just print ‘Helvetica’, you’re stuck with one monospaced font.
Working within the limitations of the printer, create a procedural ASCII Art animation printed on receipt paper.
Technical Process
While looking for a pritner on Marketplace, it was important we find one that had fancy drivers. This Bixolon has a webserver application that allows you to control the printer using a Javascript library. In addition to Bixolon’s library, we used p5.js a library designed for creative coding.
